Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

Not everything about school is reading, writing, and math. My special needs students need to learn life skills. Though they are in upper elementary school, it's never too early to start learning the skills that will be needed in the future. My students will go on to have jobs in the future. Some may stock shelves in the future. Some may sort materials for projects in an office. Some may be skilled enough to make sandwiches. They need to work on skills to help them perform these jobs.

I have requested learning toys to help my students with fine motor, sorting, ordering, and matching skills, which will help them in their future jobs.

Felt food sets will teach students matching skills. Stringing beads will help students with patterns, and also assist in building fine motor skills. Nuts and bolts will help build skills in following a specific routine. Peg board bins, plastic shoe boxes, shoe cubby, and a rolling cart will help to keep materials organized and easily accessible. Printer ink and laminating pouches will allow me to both label bins with pictures of what should be in them, but also print pictures of “recipes” using the felt food sets. The cookbook will allow us to expand our cooking curriculum with easy to follow picture recipes for my non-readers.

Learning should be fun, and it should also be functional. While I will continue working on reading and math skills, these functional skills are much more important to my students and their futures, so I cannot forget about that. The activities will also help to build independence in my students because these are tasks that can be completed by every student either individually or with a partner. Every task they can complete without adult assistance is a huge step forward.
