Help Mr. Carson

I teach fourth grade in a very high-need inner city community. My students face many challenges which society expects them to overcome. I would like to give them an opportunity to connect to a book that they could possibly relate to their own lives.

My students or their family members are often involved with law enforcement. A lot of the characters in Holes have many traits that my students might be able to make connections with. This book gets students excited about reading just by hearing the title.

I have used this book before in a small group setting and have a complete lesson plan ready to use for this book. We do not have the resources to put a book in each student’s hand, which would make a much better impact when teaching a complex moral laden story. I will use the book on CD for my students that are considered "struggling readers."

Holes is a book that I feel all fourth grade students should have the opportunity to read. The story has lessons and themes that most of our students can make connections with. This story has great vocabulary and a complexity of ideas in literature that help our students prepare for standardized tests. It is my hope that my students could take what they learned from their book and use it the rest of their educational career.
