This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our school is known to be a small school where BIG things happen (Total: 100 students). Because we are a unique magnet high school we do not offer traditional sports. We wanted to start an Esports team to help increase school attendance and school pride. We wanted to build community and relationships in our school.
Last year we started our Esports team with five freshman students who quickly made their way home each day so we could compete in a new Esports League started by UNCG.
These students beat the odds and made it to the state playoffs. Unfortunately, other students wanted to play but did not have the resources to play from home or they could not make it home in time because of their long bus ride.
This weighed heavy on my mind so I sought funding and found an organization that was willing to help us start a gaming lab at our school. Our lab has allowed all of our students to play together and learn together.
My original five students have become leaders and started recruiting other students. They have grown in their leadership skills and understanding of their responsibilities first to their education and secondly to their team.
Our original sponsor provided us with gaming computers which are great for most games, but the upcoming season of competitions are several games that require us to have a PlayStation. We do not have a PlayStation at school and again will have students who will be unable to play due to limited resources or time constraints of their transportation.
My goal is to continue to encourage student to come to school and perform their best both in the real world and the virtual world. I want them to be great players on and off the virtual court.
