Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Speech Language Pathologist working with preschool students with multiple disabilities including autism spectrum disorder. Many of our learners are only three years old! Our students have not yet acquired verbal language and have difficulty understanding and using language expressively. Our goal is to teach them functional communication skills via core words. Providing these children with visuals of core words and repetition of these words through shared reading will help them acquire basic expressive language skills.

Our students enjoy exploring picture books, alphabet toys, number toys and sensory toys.

They are extremely receptive to pictures!

My Project

The books that I have chosen include many core words. What are core words? Core words are the words that we use frequently throughout the day. Children may use these words through natural speech, manual signs or an AAC device. Some examples of core words include: see, you, I, what, help, open. Core words make up approximately 80% of the words we use on a daly basis.

I will use these books in conjunction with other materials to teach core language and improve the ability to answer basic "wh" questions and simple sequencing skills.

The books I have chosen for this project will complete my library.
