This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Speech Language Pathologist working with preschool students with multiple disabilities including autism spectrum disorder. Many of our learners are only three years old! Our students have not yet acquired verbal language and have difficulty asking for things or activities that they want. Our goal is to teach them functional communication skills. Providing these children with a "voice" reduces maladaptive behaviors often seen in our classroom. Some of our students are now using pictures to ask for their favorite toys.

Our students enjoy exploring picture books, alphabet toys, number toys and sensory toys.

They are extremely receptive to pictures!

My Project

Through the use of play children learn how to take turns, cause and effect, and most importantly language skills. In our high tech times we often lose sight of the importance of play with low tech toys. While engaging with a play partner and a toy children can learn so many new words such as: "stop, go, do, put, get, that ,like, come, help, need, make and can." They can comment using simple words such as: "yes, no, not, see." Play is how typical preschool students learn language. However, many preschoolers with disabilities do not however know how to play intuitively. This is a crucial skill to develop as play teaches children how to watch, explore, imitate, take turns and problem solve. These toys will help my students develop their play skills, social skills and ultimately language skills. Toys will be used during remote tel-therapy sessions and then brought to school when in-person learning resumes.
