My Students

Letters and numbers, all part of one problem? Do you remember how confusing it was to receive math problems that included variables for the first time? This concept can be difficult for many students to grasp. Please consider my project to help develop a strong algebraic foundation for my students.

My students are fifth graders who live in a rural area and enjoy hands-on learning.

My students have been learning strands of algebraic thinking (building number sense, practicing operations with numbers) since kindergarten and even before. Although my students are not in kindergarten, the first steps of algebra that we will be learning in fifth grade will set the foundation for all other math that my students will learn in middle and high school. Resources from this project will be shared among other fifth grade teachers to promote algebraic thinking. I want my students to be successful in learning this difficult concept.

My Project

The resources requested by this DonorsChoose.org project will help support students write and solve algebraic equations for the first time. The new Common Core standards have broadened the scope of the curriculum students are responsible for mastering at my school and nationwide. As a result, fifth grade students are now expected to master the basics of writing and solving algebraic equations. The resources of this project will enable students to balance equations by using manipulatives that are similar to chess pieces. Students are responsible for arranging and moving the pieces to find ways to balance the equations. Each piece represents a specific part of an equation. I have carefully researched this program and know that the "toy" like game pieces will engage learners of all abilities in my classroom, thus providing all students an equal opportunity to master these complicated concepts.

Fifth grade is now the beginning of true algebraic instruction.

Please help support these students as they continue on their journey through fifth grade learning about how letters and numbers relate, balance, and make sense.
