My Students

Do you remember the last time you had to sit and learn something? Most of us fidget in some way to help us stay focused on what we are learning. My students needs a way to move but still stay focused to learn during small group times.

My class usually consists of 25 kindergarten students.

Many of my families are considered low income and some are even homeless. I have a variety of languages represented in my classroom. There are also a handful of students identified as having special needs.

My Project

I have never agreed with the 'traditional' classroom views of students having to sit in hard chairs all day long. I make an effort to allow my kindergarteners ways to change up their seating throughout the day. One area that has been the most difficult to change is my small group table. This is where I meet with small groups of students to work on certain skills. This is a time when they are really trying to focus and often get fidgety trying out these challenging skills. These stability balls would allow the students a little movement and a way to put their bodies to work so their minds can concentrate on the skills being taught.

These balls will allow students' bodies to be put to work so their minds will be free to focus on learning.

Essentially this alternative seating will be their age appropriate way of tapping a pencil or kicking a leg! I believe these will be the perfect addition to this area of need in my classroom.
