My Students

I am a teacher for deaf and hard of hearing children. Because they are visual learners who are learning how to compensate by using their other senses, along with any residual hearing, it is important for them to learn via visuals and sounds. Because of the nature of itinerant teaching (traveling from school to school), I do not always have access to a computer or a device where I can use video or sound to teach my children.

Media, video, and sound are immensely significant for educating deaf and hard of hearing children.

Many of my students are nonverbal, cannot read, have no language, and have multiple physical and intellectual disabilities. In addition they learn via pictures, moving image, and videos. This presents a challenge, as an educator, in that a simple worksheet, reading passage, or book is not always enough to teach a child. For example for the deaf student who is 9 years old and reads on a first grade level, they will be unable to read a shot story about Westward Expansion. But instead would benefit from viewing pictures of it along with watching short documentaries about it.

My Project

Students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing struggle with both academic skills and auditory skills. Because of their hearing loss, they tend to miss much of the information they learn in a classroom. As a traveling teacher, I have the chance to have one on one sessions with the students where I can help fill in the learning gaps for them. However, this is sometimes difficult when their best mode of communication and learning is visual (video/media) but I don't have ready access to a classroom or computers all the time (almost never).

An Apple iPad will put learning in the palm of their hands by allowing them to take concepts, lessons, and new information learned it class and access it visually.
