I teach first grade in a small farming town in Illinois. We have such a diverse students population. On one side of town, we have students who come from half-million-dollar homes and on the other side of town students who come from public-housing situations. 30% of our student population receives free and reduced price lunch and school fees. My goal for all my students is to give each and every one of them the same opportunity to learn with every advantage possible.
If I can accomplish one thing in the short time I have my students, it would be that know that I truly love and value them as individuals.
My Project
My students LOVE our alternative seating classroom and the opportunities it allows! I would love to get some more carpets and smaller tables to offer my students more options for places to learn.
The smaller tables would allow for me to have different seating options around the room for students to choose.
Allowing my students to choose where they sit daily empowers them. They learn how and where they learn best. The alternative seating classroom also allows my students to move around, which has had a positive impact on my students ability to focus.
The new rugs for our room would also be a nice addition. The students love to take a pillow and lay on the floor when reading or writing. However, with hard tile floors, this can get a uncomfortable after a while. The rugs would help give them a cozy place to go.
