Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students and I begin our day with a morning meeting. During this time, we are community building, setting the tone for the day, and celebrating the learning that has been happening. It is my goal to not only foster life- long learners but nurture responsible citizens in their communities.

My fifth graders come from a diverse range of academic abilities and emotional needs.

They are between the ages of 10 and 12.

They are eager to please and get excited to learn new things. Our school services 420 students, 99% of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is located in an inner city high poverty neighborhood where the crime rate is high.

My Project

All day long, the students are working in partnerships, small groups, and whole group. The rug will give the students a comfortable place to work and learn. It is my hope, by adding the rug the students will be able to move about the room and sit not only at their desks, but on the floor. When students are engaged in rigorous lessons and comfortable in their learning environment, the possibilities are endless!

One day a week, we have a mindfulness/yoga teacher that leads the classroom in various stretching, brain jam, and mindfulness practices.

The rug will allow for my students who are active to move and sit in other places to learn and provide a mindful place to practice their resilience/mindfulness lessons.
