This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher teaching in a Title 1 school in Staten Island in a self contained classroom. My classroom has a very unique mix of students representing a variety of cultures, economic statuses, academic, physical and social needs.

My students need a classroom that is fit for their academic, social and physical needs.

Studies have shown that flexible seating choices in a classroom improve students learning dramatically. Giving students the opportunity to take ownership of where and how they learn is crucial.

My Project

My students need an environment that will help support their learning needs. In my school we teach students to practice the 7 habits of being an effective leader. What better way to show this than by allowing students to have full control of how they will learn so that can be fully committed and engaged during classroom instruction.

Having the options of flexible seating in my classroom will enable my students to be more successful and ready to learn.

I have found that students love having Having options for flexible seating in my classroom will enable my students to be more successful and ready to learn. I have found that students love having options for seating, such as wobble stools, yoga balls, stadium seats and bean bag chairs.

Students in my classroom will have the opportunity to change their seating options daily to support their learning needs. As a special education teacher, I want my students to feel at home, safe and comfortable in my classroom and flexible seating will accomplish this. The opportunity to provide flexible seating in my classroom means my students are comfortable, being able to move around in an appropriate way while staying on task doing their work.
