My Students

My 2nd grade art students need practice cutting and gluing. This is a fine motor skill that requires lots of practice to master; and, unfortunately, they don't have much time for this in their regular classrooms. They need to be immersed in art-making that focuses on these 2 essential skills.

My students primarily come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and do not have access to quality arts experiences.

In addition, they don't typically have opportunities at home to cut or glue (or paint or color with crayons either). I would like to give my students the opportunity to study these master artists, create their own quality artworks, and master the fine motor skills of cutting and gluing. I know that these students will be engaged with these projects because they always love being read to, looking at new artworks, and learning new things. They really enjoy doing things with their hands. There are no words to accurately describe the sense of satisfaction they feel when they create something! I would like to make these projects especially appealing by adding color with paints and crayons to their cutting and gluing since the majority of them do not have opportunities for these experiences outside of my classroom.

My Project

I have designed 3 projects for my second graders that will allow them to not only focus on cutting and gluing, but to also study the artworks of 3 master artists and create quality pieces themselves. The first project they will create is based on Andy Warhol's famous cat prints. They will listen to me read about Andy Warhol and study his famous cats. They will then create their own cat. They will be able to practice cutting as they create a background with cut pieces of tissue paper and a cat cut from tag board. They will assemble these pieces and glue onto another sheet of paper, creating a collage. The second project will be based on Gustav Klimt's Baby (Cradle). They will listen to me read about Klimt and his famous works. They will then create their own baby. They will cut the pieces for the project, assemble, and glue. For the third project, they will study the works of Jackson Pollock. They will create a collage of shapes and use his action painting technique on top.

This project will expose my students to master artists, allow them to create their own pieces, provide them the opportunity to be read to, and help them master skills that will be essential to their artistic endeavors in the later grades.

These projects equal about a $6 investment per student, which is a really good deal considering that each child will create 3 pieces of art. In addition, most of the supplies can be used over and over for other projects, and the books can be reused every year.
