Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you still quote the lines from some of your favorite books? My students are just beginning to appreciate the craft of a quality piece of literature. They are moving from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn and this project will help them progress along this continuum.

Approximately half of the students in my class come from Spanish-speaking homes.

The other half are either African-American or of Vietnamese heritage. Eighty-five percent of our students are at- or below-the poverty level. Together, they constitute a group of motivated, caring third-grade students.

My Project

I have requested multiple copies of several texts written by three authors: Patricia Polacco, William Steig and Oliver Jeffers to support focused studies of these authors' work. The authors highlighted in this grant application call upon experiences in their own lives to craft intelligent, engaging narratives (both realistic and fantasy) that offer multiple opportunities for study. We will use them to look at: author's craft, vivid description, precise vocabulary, effective introductions and conclusions, as well as identify the underlying message (theme) of the piece. Because of the multiple entry points for each of the identified texts, with each rereading children will gain new insight into the authors' craft. These elements will serve students well as we work to improve their own skills in writing narratives.

We have already begun to gather gems and techniques from engaging authors and this grant will help us to move forward in our learning.

The selected texts will not only serve my students well this year, but will expand our class library and serve the third grade students for years to come.
