My Project

I firmly believe that my students are capable of finding success in math, regardless of their background and prior knowledge. Many of my students may come into the classroom fearful of making mistakes—stating the wrong formula, articulating the wrong expression, writing down the incorrect answer. With the effects of the pandemic playing out, this phenomenon may be further amplified.

Whiteboards, markers, and erasers serve as a tool to reverse this trend by encouraging ALL students to participate in daily math practice, learn integral concepts, and most importantly, grow from their mistakes.

While writing on paper seems daunting, the ease of erasing on a whiteboard creates an avenue for risk taking, thereby increasing classroom participation. I envision my students writing their work on their whiteboards and holding it up so that I can check on everyone’s progress and provide them with encouragement. I can also pace around the work to observe what students are writing and facilitate conversations about their work. The immediacy of feedback and the reduction of time spent erasing or crossing out will serve as a great asset in my classroom and for my students.

As a new teacher who is excited to spread the message that everyone can find success in math, having these tools in my classroom will serve as the catalyst to that change. I am confident that my students will embrace learning if they feel that participating is void of or limited in anxiety, as well as if they feel validated for their efforts. The goal of having a class set of whiteboards is to provide such opportunities for rich procedural, conceptual, and reasoning development to nurture mathematical confidence in each and every student that walks through my classroom doors.
