My Students

How does it feel to try ten times harder than the majority of the population? How does it feel to be mentally limited going to school with limited resources?

I teach in one of the inner high schools in Baltimore City where 99% of my students receive FARMS or Free and Reduced Meals.

I work in a school where there is too much budget constraints where even a pencil is not a part of the budget in the school. I spent 3 years buying almost all the materials my students need spending about 300 to 500 dollars each year to provide them with resources and school supplies they need in the classroom. I teach special education students in the Life Skills Program who are mentally limited. Their mental abilities range from Pre-K to Grade 3. Most of them are visual and tactile learners and they do better when they see pictures or get to hold them.

My Project

With this project of mine, you would not only help them to be independent but most of all, the resources they will be getting will aid them to be career ready as they transition when they graduate in high school. This will provide opportunities for them to be exposed to many different things and eventually help them decide on the jobs they want to have. I have ordered Nasco's Program: Daily Living Skills, Life Skills Book Set, Life Skill DVD series, Community Success Book, Nasco's Pre-Vocational Work Skills Training Set-Kit 8 and Kit 5, Work Box Activity Book, Living on Your Own Set, and Nasco's Survival Signs.

A special child need not fight ten times harder when there is support around him.
