Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is made up of a diverse group of learners in a school where poverty is widespread. Our families, like so many others throughout the country, are experiencing the real struggles and hardships of the difficult economy and for some, poor financial decision making.

Economic struggles are not the only ones facing my students. Each day in the classroom highlights academic struggles that for most of them have lingered throughout their entire school career. All of my students have been identified as "at risk" or are currently in our school's Special Education program. Only one managed to pass last year's standardized state assessment in Reading. This year, I have been able to engage them in academic studies through a more hands-on approach to learning.

As a teacher, it is my job to not only resolve the academic difficulties the students are experiencing, but also prepare them with the tools they need to enter the real world. What better way to do this than to provide a "real world" situation right in the classroom! Through the creation of a student-run economy in my classroom, students will learn to appreciate the value of a dollar by working for it, saving it, and yes, even spending it (and not always on what they want). Taxes? Yes, they will have those. Rent? They will have that, too. In exchange, the students will also have the chance to learn real life job skills through classroom jobs each with its own salary and specified duties. These jobs include: Administrative Assistant, Librarian, Cleaning Crew, Messenger, Banker, and Cashier, to name a few.

You never know, your future employee may be sitting in my classroom right now. The skills they will be learning through the classroom economy will not only help solidify an understanding of state standards in Math, Social Studies, and Reading now, but will also provide them with a foundation of skills needed for their lives. Please help me to help these students learn for life.
