My Students

My Integrated Co-Teaching class consists of twenty-six students. Six of the students have an individual education plan (IEP). The school is located in Crown Heights Brooklyn. The class reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of the neighborhood. My students vary in their reading abilities. Although struggling, they are striving to learn and become better readers.

The classroom physical environment affects morale and student learning in my low-income and title one school.

I added to the statement from the edutopia article, “A place for learning: The physical environment of classrooms”. Eighty percent of the students at my school receive free lunch. In spite of their needs the environment is one layer that affects their learning.

My Project

My school has begun to change by embracing the balanced literacy approach. These donations would assist me in changing the environment and mindset of my students.

The rug that is from a kindergarten class cannot fit 26 fourth grade students on it.

We go to the rug every day during our workshops. The students read their independent books every day. Currently, my students have reading books that are in the closet because we lack bins. During small group work students would benefit from a listening center and an area for guided reading because so many of my students are reading below grade level. The benefits go beyond motivation in that the students would have the resources needed to become better readers.
