Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My first grade students are dual language learners who are enthusiastic, energetic and love to learn!! Our school is an inner city bilingual school with a goal of graduating students who are fluent in both Spanish and English.
These wonderful first graders learn to read, write, speak and listen in not just one, but TWO languages!!
While my students spend most of their day hearing and learning in Spanish, their faces light up when I come to their classroom with my English reading and learning centers. My students love the positive interactions they have with one another and their teachers while working and cooperating at these centers.
My Project
My students attend a bilingual school where the goal is to foster learning and fluency in two languages, Spanish and English. Imagine what it must be like to be in first grade and learning in two languages!! We are accomplishing learning English though the use of center games and learning activities.
Not only do these centers teach my students English, but they also foster a sense of community and positive social interactions as my students work together at each center.
My students will be taught to use these learning centers in small groups. Using these centers in this way will help my students with social interactions and speaking skills in English. As my students work on their English speaking skills they will also be learning important and needed reading skills as well, such as rhyming, sight word recognition, decoding and fluency. The English Language Learner Games will help my students not only with reading and writing in English but also to begin feeling comfortable speaking in English.
My goal is to add to the games I already have. As my students learn and grow I need to provide more challenging centers. Teaching my students to read and write in English is important, but these learning centers also allow for my students to speak and listen to one another as they work together in small groups.
