My Students

My students come from various backgrounds and bring so much to our classroom. They are students who are making the transition to high school while dealing with real life issues. Their families live in poverty stricken urban areas. As a teacher, I have to get students motivated. I do this with the texts I bring into the classroom and the learning activities we complete. My students are determined to be the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college. Many of my students know that hard work is the only way they can make their goals reality. We are a school that believes that education really is the great equalizer.

My Project

Students will complete a study of the differences and similarities of the Black Panther Movement and the Black Lives Matter Movement. The students will use the text to discuss police brutality, growing up in an urban neighborhood, and how to begin peacefully protesting as teens. This piece of literature will allow students to relate to a character so that they can improve reading and writing skills. Students will also enjoy reading this text because it has been adapted into a motion picture. We would like to read the text in time so that we can enjoy the movie as well.
