My Students

My classroom is an active learning environment where students are seated in clusters based on learning needs, content inquiry, and student interest. This allows all students to be engaged in learning. My students want to learn deeply about specific areas, especially Making and Engineering.

I have an active student body with a variety of learning styles and interests in STEM fields.

When there is a chance to break out our tool kits and start digging into electronics, their eyes light up with excitement. Some students take quickly to coding, including Javascript illustration and 3D CAD Design. Others, like me, prefer the building aspect of electronic engineering. They build and code using Arduino microprocessors. All of this excitement for learning takes place in our new school building in East Harlem, New York City.

My Project

During our Technology classes, students use a variety of materials to learn electrical engineering and computer coding. Computer coding runs the gamut from basic skills learned on code.org to more advanced students creating Javascript and 3D CAD designs and animations. Other students enjoy building, tinkering, and tear-downs for learning. It is a great joy to watch a student open up a broken radio to learn why the power switch isn't working, and then to try and find a way to rewire and fix the device keeps their brains in high gear. Little Bits kits are a great way to introduce electrical engineering to new students that want to try the building aspect, but were not into the intricacies of wiring and resistors. The kits will help to engage learners who lack some of the fine motor skills needed to work with tiny electrical components, to engage the most hyper-active students with quick results and challenges, and the most advanced students can learn to make new connections.

The more access to technology students have, the more they can see it as a learning tool, and not just a distraction.

Technology is a powerful motivator and learning tool that will engage learners of all styles and needs. The kits will provide needed access to technology that is not currently available in our building. I want my students to have every opportunity to learn with the best tools. I thank everyone who can make this happen.
