My Project

Novel studies in the classroom take reluctant readers out of their shells and inspire confidence in students and their literary abilities.

The novel "Number the Stars" is a great classroom additon as it takes readers through a historical fiction ride through the eyes of a girl about their age.

The story shows students what the Holocaust looked and felt like through the eyes of a child. It brings out empathy and compassion. It also inspires learning as students begin wanting to learn more about the events of the Holocaust and usually begin independent study while reading the book in class.

In addition to "Number the Stars", the second novel, "Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story", will allow students to gain insight into the events leading up to the September 11 attacks. The story is told from the perspective of four middle school students. This story is added to a research unit and finished with an informative writing assignment. The students gain so much from novel studies and that is why they are great in any classroom.
