This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am proud to teach at an inner city school in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, my school has been affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our school was flooded severely, and we have been relocated to a year long temporary location. Most students live within walking distance of the damaged, school and now they have to ride a bus 25 minutes each way. Despite this setback, they are eager to come to school and learn.

My school is almost totally English language learners who struggle to learn to read, write, and speak the English language.

Most of my students are from low income families that are willing to do whatever they can to help with their children's education, but that is not always enough.

The children are hardworking and thirst for knowledge. Their willingness to succeed will not be stifled by the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Learning must continue.

My Project

This past school year, my students have had a lot to deal with due to Hurricane Harvey causing immense damage to our school. As a result, we had to be relocated to a temporary location. Although our school will be rebuilt, it will take 2 years. The students are riding buses each day to a temporary location. Despite this hardship, they are still eager to learn.

To satisfy this yearning to learn the English language, the Kindle Fires will make it easy to access apps to aid with reading and writing.

The students will be able to work in centers and have fun while learning. They will also be able to work independently and using the headphones will keep them from distracting other students.

We recently found out that our temporary location is only for this year and that we will be relocated again for the next school year. That means that we will have to pack up our supplies for the move. Thus the need for sturdy, durable storage containers to protect our materials.
