Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many years ago, Kindergarten was all about socialization and learning to get along with others. Now all that has changed. By the time my children leave Kindergarten, they are expected to be readers and writers. In order to be a better reader, children need to be exposed to different types of genre.

My twenty five four and five year olds are so enthusiastic when they come to school.

They can't wait for our morning story. For some of my children, being in school is the only exposure they may have to books or any reading material at all for that matter. Many of our parents do not have enough left over after buying the necessities for their families that books are not always a priority. My children get so excited when the mail comes with the new Scholastic News or Time For Kids because it makes them feel like a big kid. They feel like they are reading their own little newspaper.

My Project

With a subscription for all to Time For Kids my children will be exposed to a weekly news magazine that will motivate them to read, four non fiction editions will come each month. This will help us when we are writing our informational pieces. You would be surprised how much information can be dissected from these magazines. The children love using them to gather information. We will also be able to use the ten copies of "Let's Find Out" to work in groups to gather information. That is just one way this magazine will be used. When the first few issues arrive, I lead the group, but by the end of the year, the children will be reading the magazines to me. What a thrill for all of us. I tell them I love it when I can sit back and be read to, it is such a great feeling for all of us. Not only do these magazines help my children read and work on informational writing they also teach about current events that are happening in our world as well as animals, seasons, and all things Kindergarten.

With your help, we can show my children all they can learn from "Time For Kids" and "Let's Find Out".

These magazines will help develop early learning skills with simple language that they can understand and read (eventually) by themselves. These magazines will give them confidence in themselves and make them want to become better students, as they will be using a different type of medium than just the books we have in our classroom to learn to read. I thank you in advance for your generosity.
