My Students

My students are a sweet group of first graders who come from many different countries including nations in Africa, Palestine, Iraq, Brazil, Vietnam, China, Japan, the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Cote D'Ivoire, Lebanon, Spain, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.

School is an integral part of their everyday lives and not be able to physically go to school has impacted not only my student's learning but the consistency that school brings. I have been unable to communicate with several of my students' families because of cultural norms, language barriers, and accessibility to technology because of either cost or multi-age students in the household. Some of my students received a paper curriculum that was either sent to them or picked up at school. About half of my students have been able to see me weekly during scheduled Zoom meetings, which I use to check in on students and to keep the sense of community within our at home classrooms.

My Project

Having a tablet is portable and will help my students who have been struggling with technology in their homes and communication with classmates be able to reach out. Many of my students are ESL and several are also of refugee status and do not have the financial means to provide technology (other than smart phones, which parents need for working) to their students at home. These students have missed out already on so much of the academics that have taken place during these last weeks and having access will help tremendously. A tablet will allow them to successfully continue their learning journey throughout the summer with online Summer School and other online programs such as Imagine Learning, Imagine Math and other virtual based learning opportunities.
