Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

ESCHS is a hands-on school that helps students not just learn and receive a great education but broadens their horizons and deals with the challenges that they endure every day. Most of the students are from low-income environments, but their disadvantages do not prevent them from working hard to receive a good education. We have students that come from many different backgrounds with a wide range of personal, family, school, friends and environmental problems.

As a school, we try hard to bring them helpful resources and new opportunities to help them overcome their disadvantages, ailments and personal battles.

We are very lucky to have such amazing students who work hard to reach their potential, develop new opportunities and become hard working citizens in this world. This opportunity will help them reach their goals and be calmer, empathetic and kinder human beings.

My Project

This project will cover the cost so A Fair Shake program can give our selected students the opportunity to work with a therapy dog team over a 10-week period. Weekly sessions combine hands-on work with the dogs and a curriculum of dog-related topics.

As they practice commands and teach tricks, young people learn about communication, see the power of positive reinforcement, and build relationships based on trust and respect with the dogs and each other.

Our students will learn about shelters, rescue, and breed discrimination, topics that often resonate with their own life experiences.

Other activities may include interviewing dog owners at local parks about their relationship with their dogs and virtually adopting shelter dogs. Through the sessions, the students will get the chance to see and understand dogs as vulnerable, sentient beings, perhaps more like the students than they initially realized. Through this program, the selected students will develop patience, tolerance, positive reinforcement, trust, and communication skills.

Bringing therapy dogs to school can help our students build on empathy, teamwork, and positive communication skills. This will happen by building a positive relationship with the dogs that stem from honesty, positivity, communication, trust and mutual respect. If we bring this opportunity of therapy dogs to ESCHS we can help our students learn multiple ways to manage emotions, improve their social skills, and express empathy towards others.
