This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This Lunar New Year project request is a schoolwide preK-5 project.

Our Dual Language Mandarin team met today to do our Lunar New Year celebrations planning and came up with the idea to share the Chinese culture by teaching our students how to do Chinese calligraphy, as well as how to use chopsticks.

We will need your help to get the supplies needed to carry out this Lunar New Year project.

Chopsticks are ubiquitous in Asia and an important part of Asian food culture. The schoolwide chopstick project will be one where our school community looks into the various types of chopsticks in different Asian cultures, as well as how to properly hold and use chopsticks. According to research by medical scientists, brains and arms develop fully through the use of chopsticks. Learning about the history of chopsticks, and how to use chopsticks not only help our diverse student population understand the Asian culture, but will also help to develop our students' hand-eye coordination and precision of movement. This chopsticks activity will be part of our Asian food culture lessons.

We also plan to implement a schoolwide Chinese calligraphy hands-on writing project where students will be introduced to Chinese characters written in the art form. Students will get to practice using the brush to do Chinese calligraphy to create lucky spring couplets to take home to share with their families. They will also learn about the "Four Treasures of a Scholar's Studio" in Chinese calligraphy, namely the Chinese brush, the inkstick, paper, and inkstone.

The culminating schoolwide activity will be sharing of good wishes in red envelopes, as well as enjoying some fortune cookies!

Thank you for your consideration to help us with this Lunar New Year project. Happy Lunar New Year!
