My Project

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see my students face several challenges in and out of the classroom. I am a first-year, 3rd-5th grade special education teacher at an inner-city school in Mid-City Los Angeles. All my students come from low-income backgrounds, and school items aren’t available to them because of financial hardships. Parents make the tough decision to pay a bill or put food on the table and forgoing school essentials to help their children excel. My students are often many grade levels behind, nonverbal, and full of many talents. Despite these many challenges, my students always come ready to learn.

My goal is for my students to embrace their unlimited potential and reach all their goals and dreams.

From the minute they walk into the classroom, I focus on helping my students develop a growth mindset. We learn to embrace our differences and help spread kindness. By doing these things, I hope to empower my students to continue a path of academic excellence. Due to having multiple grade levels, my classroom is set up in rotations to target their needs. My students often require repetition of skills and interactive, hands-on tools to retain academic knowledge. The whiteboard markers, multi-cultural colors, markers, whiteboard erasers, CD players, and earbuds will help my students engage with the material. The CD players and earbuds will be used for students to follow along to read aloud books. The markers will be used for color coding texts, word work, and art activities. Obtaining the items for this project would tremendously help my students academically by improving the centers we develop in our classroom.
