Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This school year I have a bridge class, a combination of first and second grade students. Due to budget cuts and a decreased number of students in our school we had to combine two grades. We are a small school of K-8th grade students. In the primary grades we are required to teach the main 5 subjects: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

To meet the needs of my students and abide by the curriculum we engage in a lot of group work. For Math and Science I must teach both curriculum so the students meet their standards. A colleague pulls out the second grade students for math and I teach the first graders. However, for science I teach both grades during separate times 3 times a week. During which the other grade has learning centers. Right now it is difficult because the students do not remain engaged in their centers because of the lack of materials. Therefore, while I am teaching, I have to continuously interrupt the lesson and address issues that arise from the students not being engaged and completing their tasks.

In order to keep the students truly engaged there need to be more interesting materials added to our centers. The materials that are needed will also support the ongoing learning for all the subjects and skills taught in our classroom. It will also help the students who are struggling with the skills they should master for their age and grade level.

If you support our project you will be helping children reach their goals of being on grade level. You will be empowering me to use creative hands on activities to keep the interest and engagement of the students. We would greatly appreciate any materials that can be contributed to our goal of becoming better students and engaged learners.
