This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In Second Grade, students learn about the world around them in science and social studies. In our Changing Landscapes Science Unit, students learn the names and shapes of landforms and how those are drawn in maps. They read about cliffs, mesas, valleys, and peninsulas. They investigate what landforms are made of and how erosion changes them. In our Social Studies Unit, Our Changing Landscape, students continue learning about landforms and how humans change the landscape. Then, they explore how population growth and urbanization impact the landscape, ultimately building an understanding that some changes to the landscape are made not just for survival but also to accommodate growth.

In order to help students remember the vocabulary and the shapes of these landforms, I want to have them build them with Lego bricks.

During indoor recess or free play time, students will continue to practice the concepts that we learned in science. I will encourage them to talk to each other about the landforms they are making and how those landforms might change with erosion. I will encourage connections to how humans change the natural landscape as a population grows. We can then use the Lego bricks to help us illustrate concepts that we have learned. At the end of the unit, I will have students create short presentations about their landforms to show their understanding of the concepts we will learn.
