Learning Basics

My Students

Located in New York City, the majority of our students at our elementary school are from low income/poverty level socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of our students qualify for free school lunch and many receive support from other community programs. We also have a high rate of students who come from various cultures, including Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Arabic speaking households, and present at school as English language learners.

Most of my students are enrolled in substantially separate special education classrooms.

I have students with a broad range of disabilities ranging from non-verbal, delayed language, severe articulation disorders, and immature social skills. They carry various diagnoses such as developmental delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cleft Palate, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Attention Deficit Disorders, cognitive impairments, language based difficulties and stuttering disorders.

My Project

My adorable students desperately need these materials to get more hands on in therapy. Multi modality learning helps me reach many students needs and helps them achieve their therapy goals effectively. Over time our classroom basics get depleted. When working with special needs children, our more delicate supplies such as iPads need to be well protected from inevitable falls and drops. We will be more comfy in our literacy corner. The beanbag seating will provide a casual alternative to explore the world of books. This will also help to facilitate conversations, discussions, and questioning skills among my students. New art supplies make learning that much more fun!
