Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A melting pot is how I can describe my class, students who newly arrived from Africa, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and many other countries.

Afraid and timid they come, experiencing a culture shock.

Some cry at their desk for weeks until they realize that it is safe here, in my room. Some have been separated from their mothers and fathers who were left behind in their birth countries.

Little by little, they open up and begin to trust me and each other. Little by little, they are ready to learn a whole new language. It is my job to get my children to that stage where their minds are free of worries and are open to knowledge. They know that no matter what, we are a family here in this room.

The neighborhood where I teach is located in urban New York. My students' families are predominantly low income/ high poverty hispanic and african americans. They are sons and daughters to many single mothers.

The parents who I met with during parent teacher conferences expressed their concern for not being able to help their children due to the language and educational

My Project

This past March, we all had to change the way we teach and learn in a matter of days! It took a while for my first graders to receive their iPad devices from the city and learn how to use them properly. Day One, when we logged onto Zoom, they were all still in bed in their pj's. My first graders learned that it is very important to have a special place that has their learning materials, as well as their DOE iPads. They struggled balancing the iPads where they were sitting, and it created an unnecessary distraction. I would like to provide my students in September, an iPad pillow to help them with this problem. I would like for them to feel that learning is fun and having dry erase boards and markers will do just that! The composition notebooks will be used to practice writing. I know that some will feel like they can't write, so the space for drawing pictures will be great for them.
