Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember all the learning and fun activities you did in kindergarten? Do you remember who your friends were and the projects and assignments completed? Not many remember their first year in school. Taking pictures and using them in projects allows students to remember their school years.

I have 24 students who live and go to school in a low income community in California.

Many of the families from my school cannot spend money for cameras or supplies they need to develop or save pictures. I spend money from my own income to buy cameras, ink, photo paper, blank CD/DVDs, and printers. I do this so that my students can have everything they need to make fun and exciting projects and feel excited about learning.

My Project

I am constantly taking pictures in my classroom of all the activities and learning taking place. I use pictures taken in class of my students to make picture books, writing projects, and science experiments. I use the pictures to show parents what projects students are working on, and document all the activities my kindergarten students do with their 5th grade buddies. My students get excited about working on projects and writing stories when they know that they will be able to incorporate pictures into their work. My students need a camera and memory card to document all the wonderful projects and activities they do in kindergarten.

At the end of the school year I create a slide show which shows how much my students have learned, grown, and the fun they've had while learning.

I give a copy of the slide show to each of my students. Many of my parents look forward to this special gift as a keep sake of what their child did in kindergarten and how much they grew and matured their first year in school. My students also have a year full of projects and activities with pictures that they get to keep and continue to look at for years to come.
