My Project
It is no secret that life skills are important in special education. Our students are always learning the skills to prepare them for adulthood. What a great thing it would be if we could learn those skills while helping others!
Making care packages and preparing small meals for hungry students is a great way to learn and give for the holidays.
The items in this project will help us attack hunger from two angle. The first angle is to stock our class kitchen with the tools we need to prepare small, simple, meals for students who need them. While we learn, we are feeding others. Many of our autistic schoolmates do not eat the state provided lunch due to sensory or feeding issues. They will go hungry and sometimes that was the only food they were offered. By having the tools to prepare simple meals, we can make sure the students do not have to go hungry.
We even got a "cupcake" maker to make cupcakes for students whose families cannot send them in. No one should go without celebrating a birthday in school!
The next angle is to help those who need food at home or in a shelter. We will be making "care packages" for students. These care packages will have some "healthy" options but will also have the goodies that many food pantries cannot keep in stock. Kids deserve cookies and snacks too!
After preparing care packages, we will give them to those who need and deliver the rest to a local charity to help fight hunger in the community.
