Learning Algebra as a Non-English Speaker

Help me give my students materials to support their learning in Algebra 1, especially several students who don't speak English as their primary language.

My Project

Algebra 1 is tough, especially if you live in America and don't speak English. In SC, students in Algebra 1 take the EOC exam and it's worth 20% of their final grade. Unfortunately, this exam is only provided in English. There are accommodations that we can offer; however, the learning experience is still a challenge when you're trying to learn Algebra and English at the same time.

To help our non-native students succeed in Algebra 1 and their final exam, these items will contribute to holding sessions outside of class to build their basics in English, help them recognize key math terms, and improve their fluency in solving real-world problems.

These sessions are likely to be held during the school day as an "on-site field trip" and will have a variety of stations to meet all of their needs. No matter the language they speak, I want them to work together in learning English and math. Since all of these sessions are held outside of class, being mobile is a must. The utility cart to carry materials and the whiteboard make that easy. The pen scanner and flashcards will help in having auditory and visual translations. The magnetic coordinate plane, colored paper, chart paper, markers, and erasers will serve as materials to make the session accessible and engaging.

I hope that you will consider contributing to these students. They're just ordinary kids trying to navigate their way through high school like anyone else. I have built meaningful relationships with my students learning English and they truly have a piece of my heart. This is a great opportunity for teachers and students to work together in intentionally planned small groups to promote community and appropriate study habits, and to have fun while learning. This will foster increased scores and promote a growth mindset.
