This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are really excited about the opportunity to dissect cow eyes.

My students are 7th grade students from NY.

My students attend a school that includes grades 6-12. My students really love science this year. They are passionate about learning different topics that we have covered already. I know that they will be ecstatic to know that we are going to be doing a cow eye dissection to learn more about the eye and how light produces vision.

My Project

Next week, my students are beginning the chemistry unit of the 7th grade curriculum. We begin by discussing energy in the form of sound and light waves. After talking about light waves, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the human eye and vision, we will be dissecting cow eyes. The students will be completing a virtual cow eye in groups to prepare for the actual cow eye dissection. We are asking for 26 cow eyes and 2 sheep brains to help our dissection lessons. Students will then have the opportunity to investigate how vision is produced and the parts of the eye through a hands on cow eye dissection.

In middle school, students can be inspired to love science and pursue a career in science later in life.

Funding this project will inspire students and make them more engaged in science class. A hands-on lab dissection will get students who can normally be disengaged or disruptive on board with what the class is learning about. My students from last year who participated in this activity still come back to me and talk about how much they enjoyed the dissection.
