My Students

Our school is a public transfer high school that offers internships and in-house classes. Our students are artsy, musical, and curious about the world. They are very into hands on projects and learning experientially. Our school is also in the consortium, so our students create a portfolio for graduation of their best projects.

Our talented, musical, artistic students often come from schools where they have encountered some type of obstacle in their success.

Our goal is to make projects connect to their world so they can see the importance of learning about science. In our classes, students first learn about the subject and then use what they learned to design their own experiments. The scientific paper they write can be edited multiple times and presented in front of a panel as one of their graduation requirements.

My Project

In the Neuroscience of Art class we'll be discovering how our visual system "sees" our surroundings. We start the class by dissecting a sheep brains to become more familiar with how the optic nerve sends visual information to the back of the brain. Then, we examine a cow's eyeball and learn more about why we experience optical illusions.

Students use what they learned about the visual system to design a totally original experiment so they can embark on an adventure of exploring the last frontier of science!

Student designed experiments will have to do with how we see things, and why the brain sometimes get's tricked. Many of our students are artists so this information will help them create more informed artworks in the future. For those students interested in medical fields, learning about neuroscience will be a solid foundation for college readiness!
