My Students

I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders, and all day long they have fun growing, thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Many of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.

My students learn best when I generate excitement for learning.

I introduced the artifacts of the Tongva Native Americans by burying artifacts that I have collected in our school's garden beds so every student in my class could have the opportunity to participate in an archaeological dig and find the artifacts, measure them, and record on a grid where the artifacts were found.

My students then created a museum exhibit of the artifacts and made educated guesses regarding what people used these artifacts and what they were used for. We are just beginning to formally learn about the Tongva Native Americans that once lived in our community and also near the Pacific Ocean.

My Project

The Native Americans who lived in Southern California are the Tongva. We are currently researching their basketry, lifestyle, diet, and what their homes were made of. Unfortunately, there are not many books available that are appropriate for third graders to read.

I have requested 14 copies of the book, California's Indian Nations (Primary Source Readers) by Ben Nussbaum because it is filled with great photographs and information about the culture and history of three California Indian tribes: the Yana, the Yokuts, and the Tongva.

With these books, my students will be able to focus on learning more about the Tongva and also contrasting the lives of the Tongva with the other two tribes. Your help donating to this project is greatly appreciated!
