Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher, I am always on a constant quest to bring rich and diverse read alouds into my classroom. Ones that foster deep conversation, connection, realizations, and make topics such as diversity and acceptance the norm. Students should no be afraid to discuss their identity or the identity of those they love. We live in a world that is a melting pot for diversity and young children should be comfortable reading about the experiences of others. Children are curious and read alouds are a great way to build curiosity and answer questions.

It is important to choose read alouds that are representative of the community, shared experiences and acknowledgement of others lived experiences.

By having conversations with young children we create a world of acceptance and understanding. Rather than making topics around identity and diversity something students are not comfortable discussing and looked down upon.

With pride month at the end of the school year I want to ensure that I have read alouds for my classroom for the month of June. But it is important to remember that these books are not just for one month but should be explored throughout the school year. Love is love!
