Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When we grew up, knowing cursive and Latin were parts of being adults. Now, if we want our students to be ready for the world they will face as adults, knowing technology is first and foremost.

My students are mostly Latino and bilingual.

More than 80% of them are on free and reduced lunch. They are energetic learners and constantly searching for knowledge. They also see the technological world around them, and yet do not have direct access to technology at home and do not get to create things through technology. We are in California, the breadbasket of technology, and my students cannot fluently type or create a presentation on a computer. I want them to go into middle school as 21st century learners who can just as easily create a multimedia presentation as write an engaging essay on the American Revolution. The earlier they learn these skills the more effortless they will be and the more naturally they will interact with technology.

My Project

I am requesting 30 Chromebooks. These will be used with my 65 students to create multimedia presentations, research passionate subjects, and engage the world around them. We will use Google's suite of technology to share work across the cloud, where I can give them comments on their work and students can collaborate on projects. My students will learn the basics and the intricacies of creating word documents (technically Google documents), presentations, spreadsheets for data, and so much more. They will also learn how to research in our technological world, what is a good source, what is a bad source, how do we find fact and not opinion online. They will also learn basic skills of interacting with technology (how to take care of a computer, how to type, how to share documents and create new ones).

In education we are so focused on rote skills and knowledge, but all this knowledge with out technological wherewithal is a distinct disadvantage they will have to others who grow up with a laptop in their bedroom and wireless Internet in their homes.

I want my students to not only know technology as they grow and go off to college, but to have natural abilities with technology and to be able to effortlessly engage others through technology. Learning the basics of computing now will allow this.
