Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious, kind, and persistent children. Our school is a Title 1 School meaning the large majority of students are low-income, receive free lunch, and some are in shelters.

The one problem is my classroom does not have a rug in our whole class meeting area.

A classroom rug would add a nurturing component to our classroom and foster comfort and a feeling of home to our students which promotes learning.

In addition, this year we study many exciting and engaging topics in Social Studies. We start with studying the 7 continents, and explore countries all over the world including the United States, Egypt, China, and Brazil. A rug with the 7 continents would foster knowledge of our curriculum and be a great visual to help ensure our students really learn where they are located in a fun way! Lastly, for our students with special needs, the visuals and sensory aspect would really help them grasp this knowledge.

This curriculum rug would not only benefit our current third graders in front of us as I write this, but third graders in our school for many years to come.

My Project

This rug with the seven continents will help motivate my students to gain a greater knowledge of where they live in relation to their country, which is part of a continent, which is one of seven continents. We can do repeated practice during morning meetings to help students really learn the names and locations of all the continents, and also countries located in the different continents.

This also will be a great resource when we do our research unit on animals.

They can automatically add background knowledge of where these animals are from by locating them on their "carpet map!" Additionally, the everyday visual will help them have repeated practice with these engaging and sensory visuals.
