Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a newcomer specialist in a low-income community. That means I work with recent immigrant students across multiple grade levels to help them learn English and integrate into life in the United States.

Most of my students are indigenous Guatemalans who acquire English as their third language, after Mam and Spanish.

Many of them had limited opportunities for formal education before immigrating. These kiddos are highly motivated to learn. They need rich opportunities to accelerate their language and content learning, so I try to teach through engaging projects related to science and social studies. They also bring a deep knowledge of life in their home communities, which we try to tap into as we study new topics.

My Project

My students were excited to receive (through a previous DonorsChoose) a plethora of materials that will allow us to take our learning outdoors--waterproof pouches, vinyl sit spots, and sturdy clipboards. However, we now need a place to keep everything!

We will store our materials in the school garden, and this cabinet will make sure they don't get wet or dirty, and the lock will make sure other students don't get curious and explore what we've got when we're not around :)
