Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in the heart of the Central Valley where most of the fruits and vegetables are produced. Because of this, we have a very large population of migrant and EL students who go back and forth between California and Mexico each year. The value of a good education is very important to these students. They want more stability in their lives and they know that a good education is key to making that happen.

These are a remarkable bunch of kids that bring joy to my class each day.

Most are first-generation students who will be the first in their families to attend college. They often struggle with language, organization, and school in general, but they never stop trying. I learn as much from them as they do from me.

I teach and AVID elective and AVID Excel class in my district. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a nonprofit college-readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. Students have to apply for this class, be interviewed, maintain a certain GPA, and are eager about their education. All my students fit this description.

My Project

This year will be very difficult for some of my students due to the online learning that must take place. AVID is very group centered and I will do my best to feed their hunger for learning. A BIG part of these classes is to teach my students “how to learn” and get past any roadblocks they encounter while learning. This is done through group tutorials. Since my students will not be face-to-face, I thought about using a book that all students will read and have many questions about. They will then bring their concerns and confusion to the group, virtually, and I will teach them to work through their roadblocks. By everyone in the class reading and having many of the same thoughts and concerns, I will be able to help them through their roadblocks better, from a distance, because we will all have read the same book.

Race and the mistreatment of people of color really resonate with my students due to the fact that most are immigrants and have brown skin.

My students have a very hard time with events that happened in the past because they look at these events with their 21 Century minds. This book will take them on a journey, showing how racist ideas started and were spread and how they can be discredited. The book STAMPED will allow my students to read about racism through history and how people dealt with this very real and ugly black eye on America.
