My Students

My students are the first generation in the French program at their high school. They all come from different backgrounds and love to celebrate their differences. They enjoy using their knowledge to learn the French language and make connections and comparisons between the rich cultures of the French-speaking countries around the world and their own. Curious, artistic, and critical thinkers, they are eager to participate in multiple projects that will enable them to feel part of a new community.

My Project

The materials needed will help my students create colorful self-portraits inspired by the French painter, Henri Matisse. During the semester where they learn how to introduce themselves in French, students will have the chance to learn about the fauvism movement and its impact on the French culture. The acetate paper will be placed on top of a student picture to help them draw their face accurately using a permanent marker. The oil pastels are key to bring life to their self-portraits, following the rules of Matisse's techniques.

This project will give my students an opportunity to learn and practice French by producing art, making connections with other content area classes, and using their creativity to express themselves freely.

The enjoyment this project provides will increase students' motivation to learn more about the French language and culture.
