This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school that has a 100% free lunch and breakfast program. Most students struggle with having their basic needs met such as clean and well-fitting clothes and shoes, sleeping soundly at night, and getting regular meals.
Majority of my students are children of color and all of them come from low-income homes.
My students are intelligent, inquisitive, and excited 1st graders who love learning and love school. I want to help them to realize they can do anything they put their mind to, and our classroom is where they are going to see that come to life!
My Project
Students learn by doing. They learn by getting involved in the constructing, evaluating, and problem solving what they are doing so further understand the processes that they are discovering.
These materials will help my students learn by doing by allowing them to have hands-on experience with science, reading, math, writing, and social relationships.
The play food will be used in math and reading centers to apply the knowledge they have gotten from whole and small groups. They will then role play using money or writing stories to further expand their knowledge and understanding of a topic. The other building materials will be used to demonstrate science concepts such as problem solving. Students will use the marble run to create a complex structure that will allow the marble to complete the set task.
Students will also use these activities to foster their social relationships with other students in the classroom. By doing this our classroom will become a place where all students feel safe and loved by everyone within it.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
