Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small, rural district in the Panhandle of Nebraska. To fill a void due to the teacher shortages, I was asked to move from teaching elementary to teaching high school English Language Arts next fall. Needless to say, most of the elementary school items that I have collected through the years will be inadequate for a high school classroom. Our two-story high school was built in 1926. The small classrooms have a cold, institutional feel with cinderblock walls. My classroom has only three electrical outlets which makes it difficult for students to plug in their laptops without stretching extension cords haphazardly across the floor. It is nearly impossible to arrange the classic desk/chair combos to allow for adequate charging access. I am excited about moving to the high school and have spent a lot of time thinking about how I want to offer my students a warm, inviting classroom with a modern "coffee house vibe" that is both engaging and accommodating.
These contemporary tables with charging stations, stools, and curtains will not only help to create a welcoming atmosphere, but will support learning by allowing for flexible seating and peer collaboration.
These coffee house style tables and stools will allow for learning versatility with quiet work stations, places for dynamic discussions, or areas for project collaborations, all while being able to charge laptops. Just imagine adding a unique blend of cozy ambiance with a balance of productive energy to literary learning pursuits. With your help, my high school English classroom will become a special place where my high school students can “learn a latte” about literature.
