My Students

I am a school social worker for students grades K-8. My students are curious, innovative, and brilliant. Our school is located on the west side of Chicago where there is a lack of resources to address the violence in the community and the trauma that comes with it. Their resilience and strength are admirable, and I feel so fortunate to learn from them every day.

My Project

Research shows that using play is an effective strategy for approaching mental health issues among youth. In my experience, most children love to play with Legos. Legos are a tool that can be used to help teach self-regulation, mindfulness, and social skills. Legos can also be used to support my students with processing difficult emotions and working through traumatic experiences.

With these Legos, my students will be provided with meaningful, therapeutic activities to help improve their mental health.

In my experience, students are most engaged when they are playing. These Legos would allow my students to build; to build positive mental health, and the social-emotional skills necessary to be successful in life.
