My Students

My future leaders are 5th grade students residing in the South Side region of Richmond, VA. The neighboring areas consist of lower income families. As a result, many of our students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as backpack lunches for the weekend due to family hardships. Although the families receive lower incomes than surrounding areas, they are extremely hard working and want the best education for their children.

Students at our elementary school are natural leaders - extremely bright, talented, and driven to succeed.

Despite our students' hard work and the efforts of our staff, many of our students are reading below grade level. This is the result of exposure to external pressures that aren't typical in suburban areas such as hunger and poverty. This puts many of our students at a disadvantage lowering their self-confidence. Although dynamics at home can be difficult, I plan to create a positive learning environment that is a testament to the fact that it is not what you have but how you make the most of it.

My Project

If funded, the requested tablets and large writing easel will aid my students with learning and instruction. It is important to me to provide my students with the opportunity to improve literacy by integrating technology through the use of a tablet. Not only will they be able to read books on the tablets, but they will also learn to use educational applications and games to aid in their spelling, listen to read-alouds, improve reading comprehension and much more.

Creating an interactive classroom environment through the use of the tablets and a dry-erase easel will engage and excite my students.

I plan to create literacy stations in which students can take turns using the tablets. I will also use the easel to demonstrate lessons and provide visuals aids. This is a comprehensive approach to instruction.
