Leadership Lunch Book Club: A Service Learning Program

My students need 30 copies of Handbook for Boys to fulfill the reading requirements of the Leadership Lunch Service Learning Program.

The Leadership Lunch is a volunteer service learning program open to my 7th grade English students. It helps students gain the skills to help themselves by helping others. The year-long lunch series provides an opportunity to develop personal responsibility. Students help other students focus on expanding active listening skills, understanding their learning styles, note-taking, and knowledge retention.

Many 7th graders enter reading at Far Below Basic, or Below Basic Reading Levels( effectively at 3rd or 4th grade levels). They are predisposed to fall further behind because they have never learned how to listen, how to avoid distractions, how to ask questions, or how to develop skills through practice. These students are often isolated by choice to hide what they don't know or by behaviors that de facto isolate them as they are sent to counseling and/or the dean's offices for violating community rules. Unfortunately the system traditionally reinforces their behaviors by giving these students attention for "acting out" rather than teaching them how to get attention for their achievements.

The Leadership Lunch program partners and trains volunteer student peer tutors with tutees under faculty leadership. Students typically meet during a 30-minute lunch period (a total of 2.5 hours/week through-out the school year). Students learn active listening, how to assess their own learning styles/needs, and how to use their talents and skills to help themselves and to help others learn. "The Handbook for Boys" by Walter Dean Meyers is used to examine critical listening, initiate self-discovery, examine how to make choices, and how to assess consequences for the choices we make. The book is rich in descriptive language and character development. It is provides many excellent "kick-off" points for rousing student-driven discussions. I have run a pilot version of this program for the last 2 years. My initial group of 6 students all graduated on stage in June of 2008. One went from F's and U's into the SAS( gifted program.) The 2007-8 cohort grew to over 25 students, including 3 who progressed from tutees to tutors over the course of the year.

Your help will enable my students to have a positive learning experience. It will help the students grow into community oriented human beings who understand that their talents and skills are valued and are of value to our community.
