My Students

My students are really special to me for many reasons. I have a wonderful group of students who come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. Being engaged in their own learning is crucial for ensuring their success. Many of my students are unable to bring in their own school supplies. I know that they learn best through active and meaningful experiences that they can connect across the content areas and to their own experiences.

I know my students' learning style and that learning by doing is essential for them because it is so highly motivating.

Unfortunately, most of the enriching experiences my students encounter are within the school walls because my students live in high poverty situations. An organized learning environment is essential in order for my students to be able to create freely! My students deserve to learn in the best way possible and that is providing the most welcoming atmosphere is extremely important. I believe that providing them with the materials they need aides in their success.

My Project

Teaching Financial literacy is a key concept that everyone has to learn and like most things, the sooner you learn the more successful you will be with it. My class is in need of an iPad, to complete 1 pagers on financial literacy. Our school is Google-based, so our students are very familiar with Google Sheets. I plan on teaching financial literacy by creating a budget on Google sheets. The students are used to having Chromebooks in the classroom, so to switch things up I would like for them to create their budget on our classroom iPad. This will allow me to have one on one time with each student as they are creating their budget. With the iPad, students will be able to successfully and efficiently place the needed information into the iPad instead of using their Chromebook. Math can be taught with real numbers that your life depends on. I want to make sure that my students are using a budget correctly in order to create a perfect plan for their money.

Budgeting is an important skill for everyone and I believe that if students learn to make a budget early and stick to it, then they will become successful with money throughout the rest of their life.

Our project will end with a one pager. Students will describe how they created their budget, why they chose the dollar amounts they did for each category of their budget, and they will explain why this is important. This will serve as a page that they can hang up and see every day and always be reminded to budget.
