Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a diverse, Title I, high school located in New York, housed within a campus of many other schools. It is one of a handful of public high schools in NYC that only admit recent immigrants; many of our students enter the ninth grade just a few days or weeks after first moving to the U.S.

Our students come from over thirty countries around the world such as Yemen, Honduras, Tibet, China, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti, to name a few.

They also speak well over thirty, different languages and they are at different levels of English language proficiency. All of our students learn English through their content courses such as math, science, literature, social studies, dance, and art. They work together collaboratively to help each other grow both their language skills and their understanding of life in this new country.

My Project

After the 2015 crisis in Flint, Michigan, where the water supply was found to be highly contaminated with lead, our school was also checked for lead levels in the drinking water. Elevated levels of lead where found in numerous faucets in our school. Our school has switched to only using water coolers, but we've never had an adequate number for all of the students - leaving long lines at the coolers while students wait for a drink and miss class time.

Students deserve easy access to clean water.

They should not have to wait behind three classes of 25 thirsty students, while instructional time ticks away. With more water coolers at our school, we will be able to meet students' basic need to be rehydrated after recess or during snack time. The self cleaning feature on these machines should keep our water clear of high levels of harmful bacteria, and the bottom loading feature will make it easier for teachers and students to change the 5 gallon jugs regularly.
